HOW to Feed Your Canine a RAW Meal
Watch this video of Cira eating a thigh….
*|END:WEB_VIDEO|*
When you start Raw Feeding as a puppy, we teach to eat from a regular stainless steel dish.
A puppy begins with light easy to handle bones and meat, like chicken wingettes- drumettes and chop meat, as one example.

These light, easy to handle items – tend NOT to drop, though the first  first week or so of training  –  you will find your dog or puppy using the floor-but soon enough- they get the hang of holding in their mouth and Crunching.

Instinctively they move the bone side to side and pulverize the bones.
This also cleans their teeth of plaque and keeps their gums healthy.

Some Clients that are transitioning their older Dogs - prefer to start with the same foods we suggest for puppies.

You know your dog best, but we find that larger dogs 40 pounds and over tend to not chew and just swallow the smaller items like wingettes – necks – drumettes.

Not a problem physically- the canine stomach was made to digest bone hunks of meat tendon…but this should not be the normal routine.

So know your Dog , watch journal and find the best meat and bone combo.

We suggest you begin with a normal size Chicken Leg for any dog that is not teacup -mini -small – somewhere form 30- 40 pounds onward most dogs can handle it well. Start there and adjust .
FEEDING LOGISTICS & THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

Think about where, when and how you will Feed them their RAW DIET  before you jump in .

  • Do you have Stainless Steel feeding bowls, are they heavy or placed inside a weighted non slip holder ?

-We place the Raw meal in a feeding dish- so they know it's food and not a toy.
-We want it sturdy – so it’s not sliding.
-We want it used for their Regular food Prior to Starting RAW DIET.  Because some dogs have issues with change and we want to limit the amount of change at one time.

  • Do you have a Crate?

-We strongly suggest you borrow one or buy one, for the first weeks.
-They will not be adapt at eating quickly and efficiently – those first days or weeks.
-Using the crate contains them and the food
    and the crate automatically teaches
    food etiquette.
Meaning ,they will not be carrying around pushing it all over the floor , learning bad habits.
-Again BEFORE you start the Raw Diet
-Introduce them to the Crate with Special Treats
and then after a few days of  feeding treats, try their
regular meals in the crate, so they by the time you intro Raw -they are comfortable, eating                            inside the crate.
How To Begin? To Treat or just Jump In….

Once again, you know your dog best.
  • Is  he/she the type that gets tummy issues when changing foods?
  • Do you  usually have to Slowly transition - when changing foods?
  • Does He/she get the gurgles and diarrhea often?
  • Nervous stomach?
  • Is spitting up a frequent occurrence ( once-twice a month)

Surprisingly if you answered Yes to one or more of these questions, then the best route for your pet is…..

Drumroll please………is......

JUST JUMP RIGHT IN!

That’s right, the opposite of what you expected us to say.

We have been around this block many times …
and dogs with stomach issues, have conflicting digestive enzymes already.

Adding the natural RAW DIET THEY WERE MADE TO EAT – SOLVES that.

But for the dogs with symptoms listed above - mixing WITH COMMERCIAL FOOD- makes it worse.

Also while Introducing RAW…
  • Do not give treats like milk bones- dental chews ( those are chemical horrors anyway)
  • Do not make Homemade wheat ,flour, grain, soy, ANY cookies or treats. That will cause diarrhea. Plus that is not a dogs natural diet.
  • Remember we want Healthy
  • You can  ( after the first few weeks) give 100% dried chicken or beef- many holistic pet stores have dried liver larynx- dried sweet potato….lots of options!
  • Do not give Peanut butter, pizza cookies cold cuts

N.  O.   T.  H.  I.  N.  G .......

But the Raw Diet Meals  for the first few weeks.

It’s important for the digestive system to re-acclimate to their natural diet and for you add a new component each week and be able to Journal.
Example:
Please see Raw Diet Intro for Visual Portion & Ratio Along with sample Monthly Meal Plans

The below weekly meal example is ONLY to INTRODUCE each component- It is not their daily meal.

It can be split into 2 meals

Picture represents the start and the end of transition
Week 1  Leg and thigh
Week 2 Leg  thigh and spoon of pumpkin
Week 3 Leg thigh -spoon of Pumpkin and spoon of Canned Salmon
Week 4 Leg thigh -spoon of pumpkin - spoon of canned salmon and a spoon or two of red ground meat or stew chunks
Week 5 Leg thigh -spoon of pumpkin - spoon of canned salmon – spoon or two red ground meat or stew chunks and a slice or two  of cows Liver or gizzard
Week 6 Leg thigh -spoon of pump - spoon of canned salmon -a spoon or two of red ground meat -a  slice or two  of cows Liver and a raw egg
TIPS
  • From the onset we sprinkle the K9 Essential Herbs Blend for breath digestion, to help the digestive track , for  transitioning to Raw, and it gives them the herbs they need -but no longer find in nature ( their back yards) . They Love a Sprinkle as a Food Topper and don't realize its powerful antioxidant!
  • We use Pumpkin because it’s a Pro and Pre Biotic- you can also use a slice Cooked  Yam or Sweet Potato
  • Whenever giving raw egg – complete the nutritional  balance with Aunt Lyn’s Stop the Scoots – Calcium – contains the needed organic powdered egg shell turmeric, ginger and a special blend of spices to help vitamin absorption. Plus it’s great for Older Arthritic Dogs AND THEY LOVE IT AS A FOOD TOPPER
Raw  Natural Diet is the most nutritionally dense complete diet for canines but sometimes you will run out of this or that…. So have them on human grade-- but Canine centered Vitamin.
We use NuVet Plus, they like it as a treat - its provides all the minerals and nutrients - plus is made in a human grade pharmaceutical facility.  Bonus all our clients notice the dogs shed less when give NUVET PLUS.
Cleaning Up Afterwards , also called What if they Lick or Kiss me
A canines saliva effectively kills most bad bacteria or they would not have survived centuries.

No one we know, has ever gotten e coli or salmonella from RAW feeding their dogs.
Ironically,  we know plenty that have gotten food poisoning at restaurants.

Now -I don’t tongue kiss my dogs and they are not big lickers – though Cira loves to lick my nephew’s hands and face -when they first arrive.
No one ever got sick, not even when my nephews were little toddlers.

Talking about tongue kissing -I had one of our clients-Gracie's dad -say that Gracie often licks his face and can inadvertently catch him in the mouth- and STILL he has never gotten sick.
This is NOT  the only Raw feeder we hear this from.

However To help out the dogs natural ability and for peace of mind and just good sanitary habits .....we always clean clean clean… suggest you wipe their muzzle with water and ACV ( apple cider Vinegar) or the better smelling Aunt Lyn’s Holistic Defense Shampoo and Quick Wipe- it not just for the dogs coat- but for laundry and crate cleaning and HypoAllergenic - plus Anti Viral Bacterial and had a Bug Barrier..
