Written by” Aunt Lyn” Morales
Inside this K9 Wellness Update:

•    -Intro to RAW CANINE DIET
•    -Sample Meals
•    -Cutest Pup Of the Week
This is an intro for those who ask,
“ What the Heck is a Raw Diet”.

It’s not a “How to transition”.
It’s not on “How to Feed” or “Where to Feed”.

These subjects will be discussed  later on in the month.

This is just to show WHAT we feed, adult dogs that have transitioned to RAW DIET.

The Transition is not hard….do you need to teach a Duck to float?

Of course Not! Same with a dog and their natural diet.

We will first touch just a little bit on the “WHY”.
Then the “WHAT”

First the WHY RAW:

All canines will benefit from a raw diet, and you will be able in just a few months – if not weeks –begin to  see shiner coats, brighter teeth, clearer eyes- for dogs with issues the results will be even more stunning:

Relief from:
  • Allergies
  • Digestive disorders; from gurgles and gas to pancreatitis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Thyroid
  • Skin problems, from hair loss and itchy skin- to cysts
  • Hot spots
  • Rotten, tarter covered teeth
  • Bad breath
  • "Doggy odor" Gas
  • Recurring UTI and Ear infections………much more.
Overtime health ailments ease and begin to disappear, as the canines immune system begins working at optimum levels.
It no longer has to place so much energy into digesting unnatural processed products and worse finding storage areas for this waste- like pockets under the skin ( cysts...) - Bacteria overgrowth, ( allergies, ear, eye, skin issues ) the thyroid, kidney, liver, and the intestines can become raw and overworked ( pancreatitis....).

Raw Food is what your canine was meant to eat,
Their Gastro system was meant to digest the prey they caught and ate.
That meant bones, gizzards, muscle, skin and MEAT.

Many canines today have stomach issues, gurgles, pancreatitis, skin allergies, ear issues, red paws and goopy eyes diabetes, and sebaceous cysts filled with yellow grease.

While environmental conditions can play into a canines health, lord knows we live in a toxic world- from our floor cleaners to air fresheners…..

Just like Humans, Fresh  Food sources are Best.
Canine’s were never meant to eat processed formed commercial food.

Did God ( or Nature)  create mans’ best friend  thousands of years ago and  then wait till 1950 for the invention of commercial dog food so they can EAT WELL.?

We don’t think so.

Now if you look back on our K9 Wellness Updates- you will see MANY posts on Home Cooking For your Fur Baby.

While we feed and recommend RAW DIET, we understand you may not be ready, many people start with Home Cooked then move to Raw.

Others just Jump in.

For me – I researched for a years, began treating with chicken legs.
Saw their teeth loose that yellow hue, no more need for dental cleaning….
Saw dogs prone to anal sac issue – no longer have that smelly problem.

We began passing the word to our clients –

TREAT with RAW BONES GREAT FOR HEALTH- but COOKED BONES BAD.

All breeds from tiny  dogs ( chicken feet) to giant breeds-
We-Saw the Benefits.

And how they looked forward to their raw chicken legs, wings  necks or feet -more than their top of the line treats!

What Fur Parent doesn’t want to see their dog enjoying a treat?
But  knowing their teeth gums, anal sac ,bone  and joint health are benefiting. WIN/WIN

OK SO WHAT DOES A MEAL LOOK LIKE ?

Well many of you were surprised about how easy our cooked meal recipes were, RAW DIET IS EASIER.
Before we get into the details, look at the picture.

Does this look hard?

1 Chicken Leg  1 Chicken Thigh
That's the foundation. Not so Hard at all.

A leg and a thigh is what we recommend as a starting point for dogs between 50 -70 pounds. Of course age, breed, activity -individualism, might play into it and reduce or increase….but that’s what most will eat a day.

They will eat and love that meal with vigor.
Of course there is a little more to it….but not much more.

We feed this about 15 to 20 days a month.
We will get to the other days below.
Still Easy Peasy!
We show you this first – so you can visually see the ratio of meat to bone .
What is the RATIO?

1 Chicken Thigh has lots of meat and a very small bone, the leg more bone and less meat .

Together it’s the right balance of meat to bone.

If your dog ate a whole chicken he or she would get the proper balance of Meat – Bone – Organ and Veggie ( from the content of the preys stomach )

Canine Nutrition – Meat -Bone- Organ Meat- Veggie  Ratio

  • 70-80 %. Meat (Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Rabbit ,Duck,
  • 10-15 %  Bone- Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit Duck
  • 5-10 %   Organ Meat – cows/ poultry liver, poultry gizzard
  • 5 %   Veggie

Chicken Leg and Organ Meat + Veggie

WHAT ELSE DO CANINES ON RAW DIET NEED?

We mentioned that 15 to 20 days it’s a leg and a thigh.
Some give a leg in the morning, a thigh at night.
 While others Give one meal.

It’s all about you and your dog’s Lifestyle and what works
BEST for YOU.

Same thing with the rest of their Nutrient Ratio.
  • Some people add toppers daily to complete the nutrition ratio.
  • Others prefer to give as a meal once or twice a week
  • Others prefer one week  a month.
Once you understand the balance- have your protein varieties- you can customize what works best for you and your pooch.

Here’s 2 Choices  we recommend to those who have  transitioned to RAW-but are still Newbies, need to follow for balance.

This way you  continue to learn to judge ratio’s of not just Bone to Meat but Organ Meat - Fish - Beef – Veggies.

TIPS

As we mentioned, we will have at least 2 more Raw Diet Newsletters in the month of June .

Covering :
How to find meat sources- that are quality but less expensive than premium dog food.
How to Transition
Ideas on how and where  to feed your Dog
Puppy Raw Diet

For Now Some Brief  Tips :

-Treating with Legs- Wings...
If you are going treat.
Do it hours after and hours before a meal. In between.
We say this because many dogs can't mix commercial food with Raw. These are usually the dogs with stomach issues to begin with. Most dogs have no issue. Just to avoid the gurgles - give in between.

- We advise to give in a stainless steel food dish. She they know its food NOT A TOY. lol  To give inside their crate.
If you still have one but dont use- get it out.
Training in the crate - the first few weeks HELPS, until they get the hang of picking up crunching and eating- with no paws or floor needed. People do give outside- but for Newbies - they tend to play and if not hungry bury it.

-Freeze everything when you first purchase.
This will remove any contaminants from processing  packaging and handling

-We recommend flat packs family size for legs and the same for thighs.  Easy to Stack and Store in freezer and even the Fridge.
Supermarkets on east coast usually put them on sale 3 weeks a month . Ex 10 thighs and 13 legs $6 each one week or Buy one get one the next or 4 for $19

Purdue makes a hormone antibiotic free brand thats part of these monthly sales. Lancaster a Pennsylvania company- makes the same.

- Wings, Wingettes Drumettes - wait for sale buy fresh- if you can. Frozen bags are inexpensive BUT usually have a glaze or injected with salt for preserving.  Not good

- Canned Salmon ONLY-  fresh can have parasites. Cooked loses the calcium iand many nutrients contained in the skin and bones. Canned has all this plus rich in Omega's
By Wild Caught- USA

-Variety of Meat Protein is needed. Our Sample Menu have variety but --After every Holiday- stores have 30-50% off  red meats -turkey- rabbit-  pork.... Grab some for an occasional special treat meals for your pup-
